Lake Hope State Park
Zaleski, Ohio

 race description, disciplines & distances

Pre-race bulletin here

8+ hour adventure race through the rugged hills of Zaleski State Forest in southeast Ohio. Race will include excellent mountain biking on the trails in Lake Hope State Park and the surrounding forest roads. Not one, but TWO paddling legs on Lake Hope, and what would an Ambush race be without some very challenging navigation.

This race kicks off the Lake Hope Adventure Weekend (Buff Betty Women's Adventure Race on Sunday) at 08:00 Saturday morning. There will be challenging navigation throughout the race, and, as per usual with Ambush Adventure races, this race ends with a 'rogaine-style' finish that will enable everyone to make it by the eight hour mark.

Lake Hope is only minutes from your location.

 team composition
Teams can be anywhere from 2-4 racers, age and gender notwithstanding. Separate awards categories based on Age and gender composition (but not team size). Solos are welcome, but are forewarned that they should be especially fit and competent as support/aid stations are few and far between and all competitors must be capable of self-rescue.

 prizes & awards
Since everyone finishes at the same time, we have the opportunity for a great picnic and awards presentation after the race. That's the best part for many folks and a good opportunity to meet other athletes to train or race with in the coming season.

The top three teams in each category will receive discounted race entries to other Ambush adventure races later this year. Awards generally go three deep based on the following categories: open (overall winners), coed, all female, male masters, female master, coed masters. (Team size is not a factor in awards determination.)

 required gear
  • Bike & helmet
  • Canoe or Kayak (and PFD, paddles)
(limited number of rentals available - first come, first served)

Although we strive to keep the list of adventure racing gear to a minimum, that doesn't mean that a bike & helmet is all you should bring. You should carry whatever you need to feel safe and comfortable given the race description and potentially unstable weather conditions. This may include:

  • Hydration pack (ie. Camelbak) & plenty of water
  • bike repair kit, pump and spare tubes
  • compass & map case
  • first aid kit
  • extra clothes
  • snacks, food

 skills certifications
There are NO skills certifications required for this race. It is assumed that you are physically fit and have trained properly for this event. This race will cover a large 'footprint' and there is no way we can have enough first aid stations to provide a quick response - all teams should be capable of self-rescue, at least to the point of being able to get themselves to a manned checkpoint (which may be a considerable distance from where you run into trouble)

 maps
Maps will be of a variety of types and scales suitable for the adventure race. Maps will be premarked with checkpoint locations and there will be no need to plot CPs from UTMs.
