Mad Cow Urban Adventure Race

The Columbus Mad Cow Urban Adventure Race

Sunday June 24, 2007

Through the streets and back alleys of the urban jungle that is known as Columbus, Ohio

 race description, disciplines & distances

The Mad Cow Urban Adventure Race is unlike any other adventure race you have ever done - unless you have already done the Mad Cow itself! And even though this is the sixth running of the bulls, no two races have ever been the same. This year's edition will be no different and we have some heinous surprises in store for any brave enough to try it.

Why?
This race relies as much on mental agility as it does on physical fitness and your team will need to really stretch their brains as much as their hamstrings to finish in good style.

This six hour race includes (among other things):

  • paddling
  • biking
  • skating or scootering (your choice)
  • trekking
  • urban orienteering
  • surprise elements
The race is designed with a freestyle navigation finish so everyone will be back within 6 hours to enjoy a delicious picnic and happy hour at the end.

Previous races have been in March and November, and the cold temperatures prevented us from getting folks too wet - that won't be the case in late June, so you should plan on getting thoroughly soaked (if from nothing else other than the late afternoon thunderstorms common this time of year)

Race reports from the 2006 and 2005 Mad Cow Urban Adventure Races might give you a little better idea of what to expect.

Columbus is only minutes from your location.
Dayton 70 miles
Cincinnati 112 miles
Cleveland 135 miles
Indianapolis 175 miles
Pittsburgh 190 miles
With the convenient 10:00am START time, there's no reason you can't make it down and back in a single day

The race START is located in downtown Columbus, which on a Sunday morning is no more than 25 minutes drive from just about anywhere in town. As far as accomodations are concerned, I would try Priceline.com or Hotels.com for a good rate on a room downtown or stay at one of the many chain motels that ring the city's outerbelt.

 team composition
Solos are allowed, but if you put together an unruly mob of two, three four (or even more), you may have an easier time with some of the challenges. "But that's not fair to the solos" you say. Hey - if you are so cranky, unpleasant or dysfunctional that you can't get any of your friends to race with you, then WE'RE definitely not going to cut you any slack! Besides that...there are discounts for team entries - what more could you ask for!!!

Coed, all female or even transgendered teams are encouraged. Age groups include masters (remember - 40 is the new 30), codgers (average age 50 or greater) and geezers (average age 60 or greater). While there are no minimum ages, minors require a signed waiver from their parent, and children under 16 may not participate without an adult. This race is not really suitable for children under 14, but if you really hate your kid that much, you are welcome to drag them along for as long as they can last.

 prizes & awards
Since everyone finishes at the same time, we have the opportunity for a great picnic and awards presentation after the race. That's the best part for many folks and a good opportunity to meet other athletes to train or race with in the coming season.

The top three teams in each category will receive discounted race entries to other Ambush adventure races later this year. Awards generally go three deep based on the following categories: open (overall winners), coed, all female, male masters, female master, coed masters. In addition, there may be special awards to recognize outstanding achievement (such as fastest splits, best foot-O score, etc.).

 required gear
  • Bike & helmet
  • Canoe or Kayak (and PFD, paddles)
(limited number of rentals available - first come, first served)
  • Skates or scooter
Teams can mix-and-match skates and sccoter (in other words, some can skate and some can scoot....hell, some can even run alongside if they want.) Any type of non-motorized bicycle is OK, but potholes, curbs, etc. might be kind of hard on your 18 spoke, deep-dish aero racing wheels if you catch my drift.

Although we strive to keep the list of adventure racing gear to a minimum, that doesn't mean that a bike & helmet is all you should bring. You should carry whatever you need to feel safe and comfortable given the race description and potentially unstable weather conditions. This may include:

  • Hydration pack (ie. Camelbak) & plenty of water
  • bike repair kit, pump and spare tubes
  • compass & map case
  • cell phone - highly recommended
  • extra $$$ (including change for pop machines (or even a bus ride???)
  • although Ohio does have a concealed carry law, firearms should not be necessary, at least in the context of the race...

Given that it takes place in an urban environment, you can probably get away with a lot less than you might carry into the wilds of Borneo. Maybe you're even thinking if it gets too tough that you'll hop a COTA bus for a ride back to the finish. You are welcome to do that and I doubt anyone that finishes under their own power would tease you or heap scorn upon you or steal your lunch money.

 skills certifications
There are NO skills certifications required for this race, although you may be asked to provide a letter from a mental health professional attesting to your soundness of mind for even thinking of something crazy like this. An optional post-traumatic stress debriefing will commence immediately after the race.

 maps
Maps will be of a variety of types and scales suitable for the adventure race, and let's just say that your conventional map reading skills (or even prior knowledge of the city) may not do you much good. You will be issued your maps when you arrive so you can begin to plan your route, but don't be surprised if you get halfway through the race and we through you for a loop.
